Meet Captain George Ericson – Jack Hawkins by any other name – as he takes command of a fictitious, Flower-class corvette named HMS Compass Rose. Montserrat draws on his own naval experience to put us on board with the inexperienced crew, telling grim stories of their battle against Atlantic storms as they protect Allied convoys. From one of the smallest (albeit fictitious) ships, comes one of the most moving portrayals of ordinary men living in extraordinary times. Fun fact: the film’s screenplay was written by spy-novelist, Eric Ambler. Fun fact number two: the film was edited by one Peter Tanner. No relation to Jack.
